THE CONCEPT BEHIND THE PAINTING

I have painted a canvas with acrylic and brush, measuring two meters wide by one and a half meters high (approximately 78.7 x 59 inches). This painting was commissioned by my friend Marc from Long Beach, California, and it reflects an idea I had been mulling over for a long time. Thus, “Time is Gold” was born.

The painting is an allegory of life and time, filled with symbolism and carefully thought-out details:

Red Weasels: These creatures emerge from graves filled with doubloons and gold coins, representing the past and the future. One carries the letter “P” (past) and the other “F” (future) on their lapels. These weasels remind me of the mustelas my grandfather used for hunting, symbolizing the cunning and crucial role they play in the hunt for time.

Rusty Cars: Surrounding the graves are rusty cars that look like toys, symbolizing the obsolescence and fleeting nature of material goods.

Central Character: A character with a pumpkin head, similar to Halloween figures, emerges from a golden portal with the inscription “Time is gold” carved at the top. The letter “A” on their lapel represents the “now” in Spanish. Additionally, their shirt suggests the word “hoy” (today), emphasizing the concept of the present.

Renaissance Banner: Like the ribbons around cherubs in Renaissance paintings, this banner around the drawing bears the inscription “Life´s gains remain in death.” This phrase highlights that the material things we accumulate in life remain after our death, but the real value lies in time and how we use it.

The purpose of this painting is to reflect on the importance of living in the present. Often, we find ourselves trapped in the acquisition of material goods as a way to fill emotional voids or deficiencies, whether it be self-esteem, self-love, or happiness. These objects, although they bring us momentary joy, are not the key to a fulfilling life.

True wealth, as suggested by the title “Time is Gold,” lies in time and how we use it. Instead of focusing on what we own or desire, it is essential to value the present and live each moment with intention and awareness.

“Time is Gold” is a work that invites reflection on our relationship with time and material possessions. It serves as a reminder that time is an invaluable resource that we must appreciate and use wisely. I hope this painting is not only a piece of art for Marc but also a source of inspiration for all who view it.
